The second part of my interview with MERE
SMITH, TV writer/producer of Angel, Rome, Burn Notice, and The Nine
Lives of Chloe King. We talk a lot about Angel in the first half,
including specific episodes Mere wrote, being on set, fight
narrative, characters she loved to write for, and criticisms of the
serialized nature of television. We talk about her departure from
the show, then her subsequent jobs, including working for HBO's
Rome and USA's Burn Notice, and all the ups and downs that came
with those gigs. We touch on the differences between writing for
network and cable, job titling & the WGA in Hollywood, the
stresses of development hell and staffing season, and finally, the
obstacles Mere has run into being a female writer in a
predominantly male industry.
Note: the episode does contain spoilers to plot points in "Angel."
